Winchester formed Westminster at a point one day's travel - 10 miles - between Reisterstown and Taneytown. This led to Westminster quickly establishing hotels, eating establishments, and provisioning stores. Winchester built a home in 1760 on what is now Stoner Avenue.

When I acquired this real photo postcard of six boys identified on the reverse as the “First Boy Scouts of Westminster, Md.,” I was captivated by the children’s sober, patriotic, rag-tag resolve. With their wooden drill rifles, home-made khakis, flag and drum, these six boys clearly represent a quasi-military organization.

There are several informative, self-guided walking tours available about the physical development of Westminster, its architectural styles, its history and its folklores. All of the tours are easy to walk and are generally located along Main Street.
