North Borneo (usually known as British North Borneo, also known as the State of North Borneo) [2] was a British protectorate in the northern part of the island of Borneo, (present-day Sabah).

The present coat of arms of Sabah is largely based on the coat of arms of the British Crown Colony of North Borneo and the state coat of arms first granted on 31 August 1963. The current coat of arms of Sabah were officially established on 16 September 1988.

Those colors may have inspired the very distinctive flag flown by the governor of Sabah at the time British authority was first established in the area, a design featured in its 1882-1948 and 1948-1963 coats of arms as well as the flag badge derived from the latter.

Sabah is a federal state of Malaysia. Its flag shows the colours blue, white and red in three stripes, i.e. the colours of the Malaysian flag, and the dark blue silhouette of Mount Kinabalu in the light blue upper corner.

Jun 3, 2023 · In 1963 three more states (Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore) joined the federation and the country's name changed to Malaysia. The common explanation for the addition of the 's' in the name is that all three new states start with this letter. The number of stripes on the flag was increased to 14 as was the numbers of points on the star.

Sabah changed its flag and crest. The flag and crest of Sabah were changed to resemble the original flag and crest used when Sabah joined Malaysia in 1963. The 1982-88 flag and crest were considered rather radical for their time.
