Winterton Museum. The Natal Drakensberg is one of South Africa’s most outstanding attractions, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to its scenic beauty, crisp mountain air and crystal clear waters. Midst in this beautiful area lies the Winterton Museum.

Entrance to the museum is free but a nominal donation is welcome (R10 recommended). The museum is a treasure chest filled with memorabilia of the history of the area and its early inhabitants. Special focus is on the Zulu history, the San Art and the Boer war.

Winterton Museum is an attraction filled with local history. It has a display on the history of farming in the area as well as a unique gallery of San paintings. Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm and Saturdays 9 am – 12 pm. Sundays and public holidays are by appointment.

In the middle of this beautiful area is the Winterton Museum. It was officially opened in 1993 by Sheila Henderson and is certainly worth a visit. This is a community museum and represents living history, telling a story of the people in the area – past and present.

It is a small museum but well worth a visit for its insight into Zulu history, San rock art and the Spioenkop battle. One of the highlights is a Zulu beehive kraal replica, built by local Ngwane people.

The Winterton museum is situated in Church Street. It has some fascinating displays on the history of the area, including early inhabitants. Zulu beehive huts as well as San Art Gallery, consisting of 10 panels with 104 photographs by well-known Malcolm Pearse of various San paintings in the Berg.
