Reed Leonard Crandall (February 22, 1917 – September 13, 1982) [1][2] was an American illustrator and penciller of comic books and magazines. He was best known for the 1940s Quality Comics ' Blackhawk and for stories in EC Comics during the 1950s.

Then, in 1964, James Warren, publisher of Famous Monsters, contacted Crandall to work on a new, black and white horror comic magazine. Creepy. One of the projects Warren was working on featured adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe stories for Creepy.

Reed Crandall was born in Winslow, Indiana on February 22, 1917. His career in art started at the age of four when he wowed his parents with some of his earliest drawings. In 1935 he recieved an art scholarship at the Cleveland School of Art in northeast Ohio.

Reed Crandall’s EC Stories Artist’s Edition collects scans of Crandall’s original black-and-white art for EC Comics. The 144-page, 15” x 22” hardcover will be in stores March 22, 2017. MSRP is $150.00.

Aug 22, 2019 · Crandall (along with Eisner, Lou Fine and a few others) was really one of the greatest artists from what we call the Golden Age. As Red noted, his composition was exemplary and the finished work always looked so elegant.

Mar 26, 2005 · Before his EC work, Reed Crandall is probably best known for his work on BLACKHAWK for Quality before it was acquired by DC. Following EC he did some really nice work on Warren's black and white mags of the 1960s.
