After the Confederate States of America were defeated in the American Civil War in 1865, many former slaveholders continued to run plantations by moving to Havana. [ citation needed ] In 1863, the city walls were knocked down so that the metropolis could be enlarged.

The Confederate blockade-runner Owl, Commander John Newland Maffitt, reached Havana after successfully evading sixteen Union cruisers to enter and leave the harbour at Galveston, Texas, with military supplies. He resupplied his ship and returned to Liverpool via Nassau.
