New Zealand’s first freezing works were built at Burnside, Dunedin, in 1882 – the year of the first successful voyage of a refrigerated ship to Britain. This view, from the 1920s, shows sheep in the works’ holding paddocks.

Burnside is the site of the former Burnside Freezing Works of New Zealand Refrigerating Company, the first works of its kind in New Zealand. This large complex has its origin in a plant opened in 1881, [4] and an abattoir continued to operate at this site until 2008. [5]

The most substantial industrial establishment in Green Island was the Burnside freezing works, which opened in 1883 and finally closed in 2008. For many years it dealt mainly with venison. The works were located adjacent to the main South Island rail line, to facilitate the transport of stock.

The first freezing works were built at Burnside, Dunedin, in 1882, shortly after the first frozen meat export. In 1883 the Gear Meat Preserving and Freezing Company began freezing operations in Wellington; the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company opened a works at Belfast; and William Nelson started freezing operations at Tōmoana in Hawke’s Bay.

Aug 19, 2015 · We were staying in Burnside which is/was the location of the Burnside Freezing Works. It was one of the first of its kind in New Zealand, opening in 1883. There is something Polish Industrial about it; with an anywhere-ness. It could be any old large-scale industrial complex in any country.

Makarewa and Ocean Beach freezing works amounted to 654,000 carcasses. The total in 1945 had risen to 3,290.000, and Burnside in that year killed as many sheep as all five works had killed in 1926. Not only ha've new buildings, equipment and boilers been brought into use in recent years at Burnside, but the yards have been extended and improved.
