In 1992, BMW announced that it would build a 1,150-acre (470 ha) manufacturing facility in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States to strengthen its international production system.

It was the fastest factory start-up in automotive history—a record 23 months from site groundbreaking to first car assembled. Now over three decades later, the BMW Group has invested nearly 13.3 billion, and the plant has gone through six major expansions.

On June 23, 1992, BMW Group announced it would develop its first full manufacturing facility outside of Germany in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The first BMW came off the line on September 8, 1994, and the plant has assembled over 6.8 million cars since that day.
