The United Nations has expressed “alarm” over a sharp rise in reported executions of Ukrainian soldiers captured by Russian armed forces. According to a report published on Monday by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, 79 executions took place in 24 separate incidents since August 2024.

Ukraine's government says a video circulated on social media appears to show 6 soldiers detained by Russian forces, who "subsequently shot them dead."

International humanitarian law prohibits the execution of prisoners of war and the wounded, and regards it as a war crime.

Many Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered or were in physical custody of the Russian armed forces were shot dead on the spot,” a monitoring mission says.
