Two more men died at the Shelby County Jail this week, Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner said Friday night. The deaths make four in a week.

Sheriff Bonner seeks new facilities to address a crisis in Shelby County Jail after two recent inmate deaths, emphasizing staff shortages and outdated infrastructure.

Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner said that investigations have been opened into what happened, with Chief Jailer Kirk Fields calling it a crisis situation.

The issues are mounting at the 201 Poplar jail as the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office investigates the deaths of two more inmates, days apart from each other.

Two inmate deaths occurred at Shelby County Jail within 24 hours: one suspected overdose and one apparent suicide.

The deaths are at least the 73 death in custody since 2016, according to data maintained by ABC24, and mark the the third and fourth in one week.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said Weakley’s death appeared to be a suicide, the second in less than a year, and attributed Segerson’s death to a fentanyl overdose. At least three inmates have died from overdoses in the same time frame.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office will hold a press conference tonight, Friday, February 7 at 9:00 pm at the SCSO Training Academy, located at 993 Dovecrest Road, to discuss a recent death at the main jail at 201 Poplar.
