Netflix scored a leading 16 Oscar nominations on Thursday, most of which were awarded to “Emilia Pérez,” a genre-spanning musical drama about a drug kingpin who undergoes gender affirming surgery.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 97th annual Oscar nominations on Thursday morning.

What it is: A musical crime movie about a cartel leader (Karla Sofía Gascón) who undergoes gender transition, Emilia Pérez received the most nominations of any movie at this year’s Oscars.

“Emilia Pérez,” though, may be its best chance yet. It became the most nominated non-English language film ever, surpassing Netflix’s own “Roma,” which scored 10 nominations.

There are also for the first time in Oscar history two nominations for Best Song in Spanish, as well as more recognitions.
