Mayor Johnson was asked​ by the House Oversight Committee to testify on Capitol Hill next month about Chicago's sanctuary city status — along with other big city mayors.

Mayor Brandon Johnson says the city will continue to protect civil and human rights, a day after the mayor received a letter from Washington, D.C., stating, in summary, that Chicago and other “sanctuary cities” like it are being investigated by the U.

Johnson also has been asked to hand over all documents and communications related Chicago's sanctuary policies.

If Mayor Brandon Johnson refuses to appear as requested, it could open a new front in the ongoing battle with the GOP-controlled U.S House and the Trump administration, which is attempting to strip self-proclaimed sanctuary cities of all federal funding.

The update comes hours after Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with the mayors of Boston, Denver and New York, were sent letters asking to testify before a Congressional committee on the city's "sanctuary city" policies.
