When I was in Harpers Ferry they were talking about a bus at the visitors center that would take you over there. We lucked out and were able get in the parking lot over on that side. Forget using that parking lot on the weekends, very popular place !!! Good luck, hike on and God bless.

It took me and my wife about 2 hours to go up to the top. I would imagine it would be pretty tuff for a 6 year old as some places are quite steep. Its almost all in the shade. If he can't …

Park at the visitors center(free) and then take the shuttle bus(free) to the lower town. From there it is only about a 10 minute walk across the bridge to the trailhead.
