If you only do one hike in Big Bend, do this one. There are so many great views along the way. In my opinion, some of the most beautiful ones in the park. You'll see volcanic peaks, deep valleys, … Full review by Steve D

We went May 3, 2024 and arrived at the trailhead around 7am. The entire way up was in shade, which was welcome. We are in our late 60s and hiking poles were very helpful. Make sure to learn how to… Full review by Mommy593

Great trail with amazing views. Good climb to get to the top. Have to watch your footing due to loose rocks and steps which could be ankle or knee twisters. Overall well worth the effort to do the wh… Full review by djproco
About how long does it take to reach the top? I know we'll be stopping along the way and taking pictures. Wondering if we should pack a lunch or if it will be short enough to eat when we get back down. Thanks!

I think the black bears pretty much mind their own business, but I would not approach any Bear that you suspect has cubs. It was probably about 45 minutes to get to our point and I would take water and snacks but you have to remember I was just 70 and my wife was just 68 and we are fair hikers but if you are 57 or younger and in decent shape, you could do the top easily. We live in Virginia not too far from Shenandoah National Park so we have seen black bears there but I do not think they are as docile as bears in The Chisos Mountains.
I’m afraid of heights but can do hikes if the path seem safe (I can handle the Santa Elena Canyon trail with a bit of a pep talk)- would this trail be too scary?

my husband is afraid of heights too so up at the top it was very windy which even gave me cause. We only stayed up long enough to snap a photo. This is a much longer hike than Santa Elena and harder. There are lots of switchbacks so the elevation climb seems not too bad but lots of rocks will be in your way as you go. Personally I was never afraid of being too close to an edge or an overhang, but there are places on the trail where if someone is coming the other way you must stop as it’s only safe for one person to be moving. I’m not sure I can answer if it’s too scary BUT I will tell you bear and mountain lion are on this trail BUT I did not see any when I was there a few weeks ago.
