We had family visiting from the UK, with a little boy of 3. Wow! A must see / do in Pietermaritzburg, even if you go alone. Incredibly well preserved. Full review by Inverknoll

The best economical way to reach Pietermaritzburg it's by car for those who love exploring the country side, the distance is about 488 Km single trip and will thus require 5 hours to and 5 hours Re back. You can return in a day it's quite on a hectic side though because you need some good hours to be at Natal museum Alternatively you can take a flight from a Jhb to Pietermaritzburg or fly to Durban and drive Pietermaritzburg. If you go as group leave early with a break say st Harrsmith you can do it and return evening The road is good you stick to s national road through and through stick to N3 I hope I have tried to answer the question

Taxi cabs appear to be relatively reliable. Companies such as Chedies and Metro Cabs are probably the best.Minibus taxis are not safe though.

Hi As we will be visiting from Australia and will be travelling in a hired people carrier (draw card to be robbed), and will have all our lugguage and possessions with us, I would like to know where I could park (don't mind paying) that would prevent us from being robbed. Hi Tracy, it is quite safe to park in the vicinity of the museum as it is right next door to the Loop Street Police station. The Street is Jabu Ndlovu and is a one-way 4 lane with parking on …

Hi Tracy, it is quite safe to park in the vicinity of the museum as it is right next door to the Loop Street Police station. The Street is Jabu Ndlovu and is a one-way 4 lane with parking on either side. There is always a "car guard" around who will assist. Just ask for a name and promise to take care of him/her when you get back. Never say where you are going or how long. There is also safe parking in the Game shopping centre which is on the cnr of Chief Albert Luthulie and Jabu Ndlovu. Hint: Never leave valuable equipment in sight, either take it with you or hide it from open view. Pietermaritzburg CBD, is generally a safe place to park. Good luck and enjoy. Also visit the lion park and Birds for Africa as well as, Ithala game reserve. Aslo Butterflies for Africa is worth it.
